"Notes On The South Down National Park"

Discussion of the status of parts of Hampshire and LGC. 1 Page

About 2/3 of LGC is in West Sussex and has been designated an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) in the 1960's under the 1949 Act. The rest of LGC lies in Hampshire and is designated as a SINC (Site Of Important Nature Conservation). Parts of Bramshott and Liphook Parish Council area are SSSI (Sites Of Special Scientific Interest). AONB's are designated by the Countryside Agency, and have been designated for countryside reasons. SINC's are designated by English Nature and supported by Hampshire Wildlife Trust for higher ecological reasons. There is no progression from one designation to another and designations take a long time to achieve. Adam Wallace, Coutryside Agency, (0207 34029) said that no more AONB will be considered for the time being, but there may be a re-consideration exercise in the distant future. CPRE (Council For The Protection Of Rural England) are amoungst other things a campaign group for members. They are currently writing to CA on behalf of some Councils, who are presently outside the draft area, to lobby to get their areas included in the search area. The best contact at CA is Jane Cecil, CA, Dacre House, 19 Dacre Street, London SW1 H0DH. Tel 0207 340 2900. The CA is going through an explination exercise at present and will be making its recommendations on boudaries, planning and other considerations in September. The Golf Club could either wait until September, or write now expressing its wish that the Hamphire part of LGC be cinluded in the search area and give its reasons. A lot of the relevant information is in David Murdoch's file and some of Christine Darter's words are also appropriate. I would recommend that we write sooner rather than later giving the relevant reasons. The Parish Council has written to CA asking if the whole Parish be included in the search area. On Monday 25th June the subject will be debated again in the Parish Council and we will also be mounting exhibitions during the Summer to inform residnets what is going on.
