Club Championship 2011

52 competitors, encouragingly more than in previous years, participated in this year’s Club Championship on Saturday 11th June 2011.  Despite favourable playing conditions, scoring throughout the day was poor with only two rounds recorded under net par.  The Club Championship is divided into two parts, the Club Scratch Championship and the Douglas Hall Trophy which is presented to the handicap champion.  The scratch competition was won by Obe Ayton with a gross score of 145.  Obe had a 77 in the first round followed by an excellent 68 in the afternoon.  The Douglas Hall Trophy was won by James Brown with a combined net score of 142.  James played consistently throughout the day with two rounds of 71.

Border League Win in 2010

For the second time in four years, the Club has won the Border League.  The league consists of eight clubs near the Hampshire/Surrey border - Army, Blackmoor, Farnham, Hankley Common, Hindhead, Liphook, North Hants and West Surrey. Throughout the summer, the clubs play each other on Wednesday evenings. The format is scratch singles with three players having handicaps of less than 10 and two with handicaps of 10 or more.

The Club’s team this year was selected from Tom Wade, James Foster, James and Ben Penfold, Colin Walsh, Andy Burns, John Groombridge, Bruce Mellstrom and Murray Abraham.  Murray has managed and played for the side for many years.

The Cup was presented to the Club at the League’s Finals Day at Liphook on Friday 10th September, by the league’s founder, John Hardy - also a Liphook member.

Liphook Triumphs at Elders Invitation Day

The Elders Invitation Day takes place each year in July; this year's event was run by the St George's Hill Vets on Tuesday 4th .  All the Clubs with which Elders' matches are held are invited to send a team of four.  This year 15 Clubs sent 60 competitiors.  In parallel Liphook runs a competiton for its own Elders - 20 this year - so that each four has at least one home player.  Both are Stableford competitons.
The individual winner was Nigel Lovett-Turner (on the left of the pictue) while Liphook also won the team prize.  (Liphook also won in 2005!)

15th Liphook Scratch Cup

Henrietta Brockway (Yeovil) set a new course record on Saturday during the second round of the 36 hole Liphook Scratch Cup. After a conservative morning par round of 72, she came in with a magnificent 65 in the afternoon. She birdied all the par fives, completing the front nine in a four under par 31 and the back nine in a three under par 34.

Hampshire stars, Kerry Smith (Waterlooville), who recently came second in the European Championships in Germany, and the holder, Liz Bennett (Brokenhurst Manor), the current English Strokeplay Champion, had to content themselves with second and third places with very commendable totals of 141 (70,71) and 142 (74,68) respectively. Kerry herself held the course record of 66 until last Saturday, which she achieved in the Scratch Cup in 2000.

To add to the excitement of the day, two holes-in-one were achieved - in the morning, at the 109 yard 3rd by Gabi Heuchel (East Berks), and in the afternoon by Emma Stodart (Rugby) at the 131 yard 11th.

The greens were holding and the players found them tricky. All commented on the excellent playing conditions in perfect warm autumn sunshine with virtually no wind.

Other scratch scores included Tracey Boyes (Meon Valley) 147; Hannah Lovelock (Hindhead) 148; Katie Thompson (Corhampton) 149. (Hannah won the 36 hole handicap prize with a nett 140 (69,71) playing off a handicap of 4).

Mixed Invitation 2006

Another very pleasant event organised with inimitable panache by David and Mary Moffat. The recipe of lovely weather, good food and wine, never fails. Add to it a lovely golf course in excellent condition - what more could one want.

The Club House resounds to the sound of merry laughter as a new comedian replaces David - Tony King from Denham partnered Gay Umney and won with a magnificent score of 43 points.

The next mixed event with the Company of Moffs will be on the 3rd November - watch this space.

Hughes Cup

The Hughes Cup was played on Thursday, 10th August. The format is a mixed foursomes competition played over fourteen holes, a partnership of a junior with one of the lady members. Fewer juniors entered this year - so many were away on holiday - but the participants all agreed that is was a most enjoyable afternoon.

Ollie Kesley and Jane Jackson won with 34 points and the runners-up were Matt Hopkins and Diana Benham. Peta Hughes joined the competitiors for a delicious tea and afterwards presented the prizes.
