Wheatsheaf - Resident members

By 1963 there were 35 houses on the Enclosure, over half of which were occupied by Liphook members. Many prominent members have lived there from the early days. Col J E Blois Johnson, who lived at Hollycombe Wood, was Captain from 1928 to 1930; his wife was a member of the first first Ladies Committee and twice Ladies Captain. Allan and Doddy Macbeth - the only couple to hold captaincies simultaneously - lived at Wheatsheaf Corner. She had been British amateur lady champion. In 1963 the Club hit the gossip pages when an attractive Curtis Cup player - and former dancer - Marley Spearman - stayed on the Enclosure with members, Mr & Mrs Steven Harris, during a Ladies Championship and repaid their hospitality by marrying the husband. Grahame Bishop, Captain and President in the ‘70s and ‘80s, owned Birchwood, behind the 16th tee, where the actress Felicity Kendal now lives.

Is Your Set Up-Up To Scratch?

It never ceases to amaze me how little attention club golfers pay to their key fundamentals at set-up and how few have a pre-shot routine.

An incorrect set-up causes 99% of swing faults.Your level of success is largely determined by:

Grip

The position of your hands on the club will influence every physical action you make throughout the swing,      affecting shot direction, trajectory and ball speed.

The grip above is wrong - hands sit to the side and are in conflict.
The one on the right is correct - hands sit naturally as they hang, more on top. The V between finger and thumb points to right ear.

Aim

If you don't aim in the right direction, you can't expect the ball to find the target unless you compensate during your swing.

Stance and posture

Slouching and reaching for the ball (on the left) leads to your weight favouring your heels producing bad balance. An average Liphook member will swing his driver between 70 - 80 mph.

If you are not in a relaxed athletic and stable set-up position (the correct stance is the lower picture) , how will your shots be hit solidly and straight? Your legs are key as they are the foundation of your swing and support your upper body, allowing a powerful and accurate swing.

Why not take the time to check these key fundamentals? Any change will initially be uncomfortable, but ultimately worthwhile. Remember that we offer all members a free initial 15-minute consultation to help you help yourself.

Changes in the Handicapping System 2005

Both men and ladies now use the same handicapping scheme and members have asked why ladies should be allowed extra shots when playing against the men.

What, in the first place, is the reason for a handicap adjustment for ladies? When organising mixed competitions, stroke play or match play, the competition is in effect being held over two separate courses with two Standard Scratch Scores, even though they share fairways and greens. It would be unfair if this difference were not reflected in an adjustment to the handicaps of the players playing the harder course (that with the higher SSS).

An SSS is, by definition, the score a scratch player would be expected to return round a particular course. All handicaps are then adjusted relative to a player's performance against that score. The point is not appreciated by a good number of players that the ladies' SSS is determined against the performance of a scratch lady player and the men's likewise for a scratch man.

So the ladies' handicap is adjusted according to the difference between the two SSS of the courses being played. That mean that when the men play from the yellow tees the ladies add 5 to their handicap (SSS men 68 , SSS ladies 73) and when the men play from the white tees the ladies' add 4 to their handicap (SSS men 69, SSS ladies' 73).
