Betty Haslam Farewell

A reception was held at the Club on Saturday March 27th to mark the retirement of Betty Haslam, the longest-serving member of Liphook staff. She has worked behind the bar for sixteen years and the Captain, Ian Hewitt, recounted how Betty could remember the names of all members and many regular visitors - as well as the military rank of manyof them. Betty in turn thanked the members for their support, particularly when her husband died.

Martin Macpherson of the RNGS made a speech and presentation on behalf of the many visiting Societies who were welcomed by Betty. David Strike spoke and presented a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Bohunt Manor Golfing Society. Liphook Captain Ian Hewitt spoke warmly of Betty's loyal service to the Club and, on behalf of members, presented her with a book containing the many letters of appreciation sent by members, an engraved bowl and a cheque representing the donations by members.

Betty will appear behind the bar from time to time since she has agreed to make herself available if required.

Appointment of New Secretary

As members are aware, Ian Young has been asked by the Captain to head a small group which is coordinating the process of appointing a new Club Secretary to succeed Ian Walton. The other members of Ian's group are Keith Maplesden (Vice Captain and temporary Secretary), Ian Hewitt and George Tremlett (Committee Members) and John Hutchinson (past Committee Member).

The group is working with a firm of recruitment specialists, Prime Appointments, which has come up with a list of 14 names. Other contacts have produced a further 14, including advertising on the Officers' Association website, the MoD and suggestions from members.

From these names, a shortlist of 4 has been selected for interview, which will take place in mid-August. The successful candidates will be recommended to the General Committee who will make the final selection.

Normal Service Will Be Resumed

Following Ian Walton's decision to resign as Secretary in mid-June, the Club is plunged into the process of appointing his replacement. The situation is made more difficult this year by the fact that there will be a gap of at least six months between Ian's departure and the appointment of a new Secretary.

Vice Captain Keith Maplesden has nobly offered to stand in as temporary part-time Secretary and his offer has been accepted with alacrity by the Committee – Keith's experience as Secretary of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Golfing Union stands him in good stead.;

Meanwhile, the search is under way. At the request of the Captain, Ian Young has agreed to head up the process – he is a past Captain and a Director/Trustee of the Club. Before he retired Ian was a successful businessman, managing his own textiles company. Ian will be supported by two Committee members, George Tremlett & Ian Hewitt,  together with former Committee member John Hutchinson; their conclusions will be put to the General Committee for final decision.

It is hoped that the interviews will be held in September, following advertisements in golf magazines and a short-list prepared by a search agency. Assuming the successful candidate has to give his or her existing employers at least three months' notice, the earliest we can expect a new permanent Secretary is December this year. In the meantime, we wish Keith and the Committee the very best during the testing time which faces them.

Summer Golf 2006

Summer has now arrived and nobody is more pleased than me! It's been a long tough winter beginning with the work on the bridge, prior to Christmas, and continuing with the cold spell until Easter.

Your shop is now bursting with quality stock, with something to suit the needs of all members at very competitive prices. My main project so far has been the launch of our Loyalty Card, which has attracted 142 users since early April, all of whom are benefiting greatly with every purchase that they make. To remind everyone, you earn 1 point for every £1 spent. Collect 100 points and receive a £5 shop credit voucher. Certain products and promotions will earn you double points! Hopefully over the summer period members will continue to sign up and spread the word amongst their friends.

Please don't forget all our other wonderful benefits and services including our Club Partnership Programme (on golf club purchases), free Custom Fit, free equipment check, free 15 minute swing analysis, free 7 iron re-grip, Demo days by leading golf companies (which need to be supported if they are to continue), Demo clubs in store and courtesy of TGI (Europe's leading buying group) of whom I am a member and a free scratch card with all purchase over £25 enabling you the chance to win some great prizes twice over.

Now is a good time to iron out any swing faults and sharpen up your short game. Mark and I are on hand and will be glad to help you to reach your potential. For those of you who haven't experienced Explanar, we will soon be offering some free taster sessions. Please ask in-store for more details.

Mark and James are organising some more group sessions for juniors who are not members. Please also ask for the dates.

I very much appreciate your continued support and wish you all a very successful and enjoyable season.

Ian Mowbray

Thank You From Barry Morgan

Dear all
You may remember that at my farewell party the members very generously presented me with a Cheque for £1,800 and that Roderick told everyone that I would be putting the money towards a trip to New England.
Shirley and I have now finalised our trip and I would like to let the members know what we have planned, which is:
In late October we fly from Heathrow to Boston for 4 nights, during which we will hopefully see the Countryside and the magnificent Autumn display of trees and their leaves.
From Boston we fly to Toronto for 2 nights and then we board the Canadian for a 3 day train trip to Vancouver.  2 further nights are spent in Vancouver before flying home.
Yours
Barry
