North Hants Trophy Success for Liphook Ladies

Article written by John Douglass on the success of the Liphook Ladies in the North Hants Trophy. 364 Words.

The jewel in the crown for Liphook Ladies this golfing season was the winning of the North Hants Trophy on 12th September, 2005. This was remarkable not only because it was a County knockout with three contestants playing each leg off scratch against some very tough opposition, but because the draw was such that Liphook found itself playing on an away course in each round. On more than one occasion it seemed that defeat was looming – in the quarter-finals against the Army, Carol Browse managed to hole a magnificent putt from off the green to halve her match, going on to win at the 20th, to secure a place in the semi-finals. The semi-finals and finals were held at Meon Valley Golf Club on 12th September. The semi-finals, held in the morning, were both closely contested, with Liphook beating North Hants on the eighteenth green in the deciding match and South Winchester beating Shanklin & Sandown in a similar fashion. Carol Browse had to retire with an injury after a brilliant performance in the semi-final round against the favourites, North Hants. Ann Robertson, too, suffered some damage to her shoulder and received emergency physiotherapy from one of the Liphook supporters – Heather Evans. Joanna had already been relieved of her morning trolley pulling duties to save extra strain on her injured feet should she have to stand in for Carol in the afternoon – if Liphook managed to survive to the finals. So it was that Tracey Willmont, who had played in every match with no sign of strain, Joanna Smith and Ann Robertson went out to play in the finals against South Winchester's team, Julie Kingdom, Linzi Colmer and Fay Ross. Tracey and Joanna won their matches, so Ann and Fay were called in. Gail Lloyd, North Hants Trophy Captain for Liphook was presented with the winner's salver by the County Captain, Jackie Keay and Linzi Colmer accepted the runners-up trophy on behalf of South Winchester. Tracey Willmont played in all five matches, Ann Robertson and Carol Browse missed one each (the replacements, Pauline Provest and Joanna Smith each won their matches). The trolley pullers were Ann Bray, Joanna Smith, Cornelia Kenington and Gail Lloyd.
